Before downloading the firmware, connect the wireless router to internet via the WAN port and connect a PC/notebook (to be used for the configuration) to one of the LAN ports.
In order to access the router, the PC/notebook network card must be set to DHCP (IP automatically assigned).
At the point, the PC/notebook can be used to download dd-wrt firmware by connecting to:
With reference to the previous illustration, enter the router model in the search field (1) (i.e. WRT54GL).
In the version list (3), select "recommended" or, if not found, select the default one.
Different types of firmware are available according to the router model. Standard Generic type dd-wrt firmware is required in order for the hotspot to work. Other types of firmware, like Mini or Micro, are unsuitable since they do not have a Hotspot module (chillispot).
Carefully read the Additional Information field (2) that contains additional information on firmware installation. In our example, this field indicates that Standard Generic firmware (5) cannot be directly installed since the Mini Generic version (4) must installed first and then updated to the Standard Generic version.
In this case, download both firmware versions (Standard Generic and Mini Generic).
