Creating an Hotspot with a 3G/4G/LTE connection

With My Wi-Fi service you can create a hotspot even if you do not have an ADSL connection.

If the place where you want to create the hotspot is covered by a 3G/4G/LTE network, to create the hotspot you can use a Mikrotik router with integrated 3G/4G/LTE modem, or a router with USB port (es. TP-Link 1043,TP-Link MR 3020) and OpenWRT firmware to which will be plugged a 3G/4G/LTE dongle.

This solution is the simplest and most reliable one, because in one device you will find everything you need to make the Hotspot: a 3G/4G/LTE modem for Internet connectivity, a router to handle traffic and an access point for spread the wireless signal.


A very good Mikrotik model with such features is the wAP LTE kit (RBwAPR-2nD&R11e-LTE). This model can be powered with the common 220 V current, with PoE or with 9-30 V current (e.g. the car battery).


Configuration of these kind of devices it's quite similar to the other ones router Mikrotik: in addition to common operations, you have just to enable the "Use conectividade 3G/4G/LTE" flag in the location settings and enter the APN of your mobile operator.

The disadvantage of this solution, compared to the case of Mikrotik, is that the Internet Key is not always correctly recognized by the OpenWrt firmware.


To configure the router will need to follow the following steps:


1) Configure the router following the instructions for configuration with preconfigured firmware.


2) Plug the 3G/4G/LTE USB dongle (without disconnecting the WAN cable).


3) In "location" settings enable "Use conectividade 3G/4G/LTE" and insert the APN of your mobile operator.

4) Flag on "Send configuration Script on next boot" and reboot the router.


5) Wait about two minutes, disconnect the WAN cable and restart again the router.
